HOBIE CAT KAYAKS

I am not known for breaking promises. So when my friend Ingrid Niehaus asked me to try out one of their Hobie Cat Kayaks in Niagara Falls last spring, I promised I would at the next conference. Well, that happened to be on Table Rock Lake in Branson, Missouri at a conference for the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers (AGLOW). And all I can say is, I wish I had tried one sooner.

The Hobie Cats are basically kayaks — on steroids! They are extremely stable and are propelled with a patented flipper system called a MirageDrive.  By simply pumping your legs back and forth on pedals, you can move forward quickly and easily. Kind of like riding a bike, the faster you pump, the faster you go.  They also have a variety of fins depending on what kind of current you are fishing in. This simple feature is what separates the Hobie Cats from all other kayaks or canoes. They are perfect for fisherman because you can control the craft easily with your feet and legs, keeping your hands and arms free to cast. And they have compartments and storage bins everywhere you turn. I can’t even list all of the features. OK, I’ll try:   molded utility trays, built-in drink holders, dual helm controls, conveniently positioned rod holders, bungee straps, and in case you want to use it- a paddle. They even have a livewell available for some models — talk about accessorizing! The one similarity to ordinary kayaks is that the Hobies are incredibly simple to get in and out of the water, so you can launch them just about anywhere.
