2014 CHEVY SILVERADO 2500 IS ALL TRUCK

Chevy runs deep in my family — my dad drove Chevy’s, and I drive Chevy’s. I’ve owned and driven their cars, half-ton pickups, and Blazers, the big ones before there was such a thing as an “SUV”. So when I had the opportunity to drive a Silverado 2500 HD on my last fishing trip to Mercer Wisconsin, I figured it would just be another Chevy Truck. I was wrong.

Let’s start with the “truck” part, and this thing is ALL TRUCK. With a Duramax 6.6L Turbo Diesel, it has no problem towing up to 16,000 pounds. In the backwoods of Northern Wisconsin, it handled like a champ, up and down hills and hollows, and on and off the boat ramps. I’ve never driven a diesel, but I was surprised at how quiet it is compared to others I’ve heard. I didn’t use the 4-wheel-drive, but I didn’t have to. The truck did great without it, I can only image what kid of power it has WITH the 4WD.

Now for the luxury. This beast was fully loaded with sunroof, cooled seats, electric rear window –  heck, basically electric everything. The built-in navigation system with GPS is awesome. It allows drivers to program waypoints, so if fishermen have a great lake they want to come back to, they can program in that boat ramp so it can be found easily the next day.

One of the best features for boat owners is the rear view camera. It allows the driver to see down the boat ramp, even when the boat is out of your “over the shoulder” line of site. Anyone that has tried to back a boat down without seeing it knows what I’m talking about.

With the 4-door extended cab, we had PLENTY of room for our cameras and fishing equipment, plus the bed to hold coolers, rods, and the rest of our gear. And the back seat is huge. I took my kids for a spin with no problem, but it would easily seat three adults comfortably.

I was also surprised at the great gas mileage. We averaged 20 mpg from Chicago to Mercer (roughly 700 miles round trip).

Let me just say if you are a fisherman, outdoorsman, farmer, or all-around tough guy, you need to drive one of these. Just be careful, you’ll probably be taking it home.
